Introducing the ingenious Wick Stick - a very clever wee device that waters your plant for you! Fantastic for peace of mind when you're away from your plants for an extended period.

The Wick Stick utilises capillary action to move water from an external jar or container, directly to your pot plant. Capillary action is the process of a liquid flowing through narrow space, without being assisted by (or even opposing!) gravity.

The fibres in the cotton cord of the Wick Stick suck water through the interior of the fibre, up the copper pipe and into the soil of your pot plant. How clever is that!

Hand made here in NZ from copper, each Wick Stick features it's own unique characteristics. The copper pipe will develop a gorgeous, natural patina over time as it exposed to dirt, water & air. We think they age beautifully, but you can always polish it to get that shiny finish back!

How to use the Wick Stick:

The Wick Stick is great for plants that love water - for example, Ferns, Philodendron, Spider plant, Pothos, Elephant Ears, or Calatheas. The other factor to consider is whether that particular plant needs a Wick Stick full time, or just for when you are away or during hot dry periods.

To start off, make sure the cord is completely soaked and the soil you're working with is damp but completely drained. Also ensure the pot has a drainage hole/s, so excess water can drain right out.

Next give your soaking wet cord a squeeze to drain excess moisture - please note that if you leave it sopping wet, your Wick Stick could become a siphon and deliver too much water!

Stick one end of your cord into the soil of your pot plant. To do this easily you can create a roughly 10cm deep hole in the soil using a chopstick. Note that the more wick in the earth, the more moisture can be released. If you’re repotting your plant, you can pop the cord towards the bottom of the pot, atop a little soil while you transplant.

Make sure the copper is sitting under the soil line to minimise evaporation, stick the other end of the Wick Stick into a jar or vessel, and fill it up with water. You're ready to go!

From here you may need to do some tweaking to ensure your plant is getting the required amount of water - but 10cm of cord in your plant pot is a good place to start. If you think the plant is getting too much water (the top of your soil staying wet), pull some cord out. If you think it needs more, put in more cord. It will depend on the size and variety of the plant.
