What makes the Johanna really stand out as a top hot composting option is it's patented airflow and ventilation systems. These expertly designed systems create the optimum conditions for microorganisms; these are the little powerhouses that are necessary for composting! Microorganisms digest the waste in your composter and subsequently release energy - this is what generate heat in the compost. 

Simply twist the lid to regulate air circulation - in colder areas or during winter, twist to the minimum locked position to help your composter maintain an ideal temperature. This will also help to maintain the necessary aerobic environment, preventing any nasty smells. 

Super easy to use, you don't even need to 'pre-mix' your waste before disposing. However, to speed up the composting process it is recommended to give it the occasional stir using a compost aerator. When your compost is ready to harvest (this takes approx. 4-6 months, depending on season & conditions), simply slide off the panels located at the base of the bin to shovel out your compost. It's now ready to replenish your soil and nourish your plants!

Vermin-proof:
Safe & secure, the Johanna is constructed of strong molded plastic and has been designed to keep vermin out. It features a tight, twist-on lid for disposing waste, and two slide-off hatches at the base of the bin for harvesting completed compost. You can screw these in place to ensure the bin is completely vermin-proof. 

Placement:
Place the Johanna on soil or grass. This is because a small amount of leachate (compost tea) is produced during the composting process, which will drain from the base of the Johanna. You can position the bin in either partial or full shade. 

Assembly:
The components of the bin can be screwed together using a screwdriver in just 30-40 minutes. The main body of the composter consists of four circular sections to be screwed together.

What waste can you put in the Johanna?
Unlike a traditional compost bin, you can dispose of all types of raw and cooked food waste in the Johanna! This includes cooked food, meat, fish and dairy, alongside your other organic kitchen waste. You can also dispose of regular garden waste such as pruning, leaves, grass clippings etc. (just make sure larger stems or branches are chopped into small-ish pieces). You can also put brown cardboard and paper in the Johanna (not shiny/glossy paper).

To get your composter started, create a 10-20cm base layer of woody twigs/branches. You can then begin to add roughly two parts of garden waste to one part kitchen waste.
