Flax, cabbage trees, yuccas and kikuyu grass make regular appearances in Kiwi backyards. And while for the most part they look lovely and/or are suitable to the harsh coastal climate conditions in NZ, they are quite tough and can be difficult to maintain.

Super lightweight and made from top-quality Japanese High Carbon Steel (most other flax cutters in the market place are stainless steel), the Maruyoshi blade is tempered to give long lasting durability and features a special 'back bar' designed to add even more strength to the blade.
And while it looks very versatile and the teeth are razor sharp, it's important to note that the Flax knife is not a wood saw and should never be used in a sawing or hacking motion on wood or any other hardened plant material. The serrated blade works by pulling the blade towards you and is designed to be used only on fibrous plants. When used correctly the flax cutter blade should not bend, break or snap.

Wow! it's good product .I bought 3,for garden.Easy cutting grasses and flax leaves ,very sharp , light weight, save times and worth its. Really happy with purchase. Excellent flax cutter / does the job as advertised. Thankyou! The Maruyoshi flax cutter is awesome! Cabbage tree leaves, flax, grasses....so pleased I purchased one. Cuts through flax like a hot knife through butter. Excellent on green flax. Dry flax takes a little more effort but still makes life easy. make's my job much easier This little tool is deceptively effective. In the past I have pruned flax (I currently have two) with sharp high quality bypass secatuers but that requires reaching well into the base of the plant and typically only a single blade can be cut at a time. This sickle-like tool with its serrated cutting edge slices very quickly through one or several flax leaves with a single easy upward pull on the handle.
If the steel is good quality cutting efficiency should be retained for some considerable time but it is too early to pass judgement on that aspect. I think the blade would benefit from a light dressing of oil between uses to prevent any rust forming.
Highly recommended for flax maintenance Fantastic, wish I knew about this 5 years ago.. spent Sunday afternoon tiding up the flax and it cuts wonderfully and neatly.
