Art Shades Calendula (Calendula officinalis) was traditionally grown for its medical and culinary uses - said to stimulate the immune system and as a calming agent in topical products, the petals add a spicy flavour similar to saffron, and the yellow dyes were once used to colour butter and cheese. A great companion plant in the Vegetable Garden calendula draws aphids away for valuable plants, and encourages bees. These explosive double blooms in shades of cream, orange and yellow add a delightful pop of colour to the garden. They are easy to grow, so make great additions to a childrens garden, and love a warm sunny spot.
How To Grow:
- Sow direct where they are to flower, in rows or clumps, 12mm deep
- Keep moist.
- Thin (prick out) when seedlings are large enough to handle, spacing 25cm apart.
- Apply a pre-planting fertiliser when preparing the soil to improve the health and size of flowers.
- Remove dead heads regularly to prolong flowering.
