These traditional Tobisho A-Type pruners are hand-forged from exceptionally high quality Aogami #2 Hitachi Blue Paper Steel, laminated to the S45-C handles. Blue steel is not common when it comes to secateurs - it's harder and can be more brittle than other steels, so they need to be treated with care - but it will take and hold an edge like nothing else. These pruners are a dream to work with; once you try them there's no going back!

These A-Type Secateurs come with Tobisho red & yellow vinyl grips. Tobisho is a small family business deep in the mountains of Yamagata, an area famous for the quality of its steel.

How to get the most out of these pruners...
  • Clean with a Niwaki Crean Mate rust and sap eraser
  • Sharpen with a Niwaki #1000 grit stone
  • Protect with Niwaki Camellia Oil
  • Watch out with these - as Japanese steels get better, and sharper, so they get more brittle

Caring for your tools:

Most of Niwaki's sharp tools are crafted from carbon steel. To keep your tools in good condition and ensure they last for many years of use, they require some simple but regular maintenance. Here are some usage & care tips, to help you get the most out of your tools...

Usage:

  • Japanese steel is hard and sharp. To avoid chips and preserve the steel edge, do not cut wire, metal, stone, or plastic.
  • Do not twist or apply uneven pressure
  • It’s better to cut diagonally across branches (not straight across), so you cut along the fibres
  • For heavier cuts, make sure you’re using the base of the blades (not the tips)

Care:

  • Remove leaf resin, rust and gunk with a Crean Mate and water
  • Dry, wipe over with Camellia Oil and store in a dry place
  • Sharpen when needed (secateurs can be sharpened every couple of weeks, shears & topiary clippers after every use to see an incredible difference).
